Overview
The PRINCE2 Project Support Office can be a powerful and effective unit in an organisation, earning its keep and powering projects forward. Or it can be a an obstruction and slows down project delivery and focuses the organisation on paperwork. How you set up the PSO is crucial, and this practical and powerful workshop shows you how to set it up correctly to deliver consistently excellent service. It also trains your staff in key PRINCE skills, such as the powerful planning approach so they can give expert assistance to Project and Team Managers.
The Inspirandum Project Support Office course is based on many years of observation and involvement with project offices - PSOs. We have seen what works and what doesn't and we draw on that long experience to help you build or adjust an existing Project Office that will be not only highly effective but appreciated.
Sometimes the Project Office is seen as an 'also ran'. We show you how to completely avoid that and provide a highly professional service that is flexible to meet the very different needs of different projects and which rapidly gains a reputation as a centre of excellence.
Who should attend this course?
PSO managers and staff who are about to set up a project office or who have recently done so. The workshop is designed to run in-company to focus on your specific needs and design a project office that will meet the exact needs of your organisation's projects.
Duration
The content of our Project Support Office workshops is very flexible indeed and is carefully discussed with you to meet you exact needs whether you are setting up a Project Office from the start or adjusting the service of an existing one. Depending on the content, the workshop will typically run for between 1 and 3 days.
There is a balance with the duration to get maximum value for money. It can be tempting to go for a minimum duration and hope that staff will learn on the job. But it is easy to waste time on projects by not getting it right and skills like product planning take solid training to develop. This investment of time will be repaid many times over in effective help on future projects.
Content
The workshop can cover any or all of the following content:
- The purpose of the PRINCE2 Project Support Office
- Fitting the staffing to the purpose, and how to get staffing flexibility
- The right view of the office and why a wrong view can lead to significant problems
- Avoiding the pitfalls - PSOs that have gone wrong, and why
- What services a PSO should provide, and what services it should not
- The place of the office in providing an administrative service
- The place of the office in providing advice as a centre of excellence
- Finding supplementary staff with key project skills
- The structure of a project and particular points of support involvement
- Control mechanisms for projects, and how Project Support Offices can assist
- Instruction and practice in powerful project planning techniques
- Reporting mechanisms for projects
- Assistance with change and version control
- An overview of the PRINCE2 method and the place of Project Support within it
Adjusting the content
The content list is not exhaustive and we will work closely with you to design a workshop that meets your exact needs based, in turn, on the nature of the service to be provided by the office. Whatever the format of your workshop, the content will always be practical. It involves ‘down to earth’ discussion and practical techniques to help you help projects.
